Thank you to all the UPMC Horizon Farrell Hospital employees who joined us at our “block party” on
Friday, March 24.  Aside from the delicious cookies and pizza bites, there were great giveaways and a contest!

Employees could try to guess how many pieces of equipment were loaned through our MERP in fiscal year 2016.  Guesses ranged from 89 – 15,000!  MERP loaned 3,720 pieces of equipment, so the lucky winner, who guessed 4,000 got to choose either a jumbo UPMC chocolate bar, a camp chair or a jacket.

The great thing about the block party was that we were able to talk about the great things our foundation is doing to over 100 UPMC employees.  We hope to participate in the UPMC Horizon Greenville block party within the next few months, so look for us there!

Our Healthy Habits program was in full swing this January when about 45 eighth graders enjoyed a field trip to Thyme in Your Kitchen in Sharon, PA to learn how to cook healthy meals at home.  Thyme in Your Kitchen helped to sponsor this program that taught eighth grade students from Farrell Schools some easy meals with readily available ingredients.  Students learned how to create healthy quesadillas, make hand-made egg noodles and chicken noddle soup, and create some desserts that were nutritious.  Each student received an apron and a personal cookbook.  Students loved the class where they learned how to measure ingredients, properly chop vegetables, saute, boil and bake.  “I went home and made quesadillas for my brother and sisters right away.  We had fun making our own creations,” said one student.  Just one week later, three other students had already made quesadillas at home and several had made the egg noodles for their families.  The cooking class was added as a trial this year and the students overwhelmingly agreed that it is a keeper!

FullSizeRender (00F)The UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation’s 22nd Annual Golf Master’s Scramble was held at the Avalon at Buhl on Monday, June 27.  Golfers were greeted by a beautiful blue sky!

The day began with a great breakfast, a putting contest and a basket raffle and after 18 holes of golf, golfers
and guests enjoyed delicious appetizers and a buffet dinner.

The golf outing is our largest fundraiser of the year and proceeds are used to address unmet health and human service needs in our community.  Thank you to everyone who sponsored the event, golfed and to our many volunteers who made the day very special!FullSizeRender (015)image13

IMG_5349Thank you to our ten 9th graders who served as trainers for the fifth graders at Farrell Schools this past year.

These ninth grade students went above and beyond by being our first students to participate in the Healthy Habits for Life program as fitness trainers.  This year, these ten students taught healthy eating and exercises to their 5th grade peers at Farrell Schools.

UPMC Horizon Wellness Center’s Heather Parks presented each of the ninth grade trainers with a gift card to Dunham’s and a participation certificate.  The program is funded by the UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation.

needs cleaned pile croppedIt was a very impressive year for the Medical Equipment Recycling Program.  At a time when insurances are covering less equipment, we are thankful to community donations that have enabled us to help even more people.

MERP loaned 2,989 pieces of equipment to 2,114 people in 2015, a 39% increase over 2014’s recipient numbers.  The total value of the equipment we loaned this year is $671,690.

With your donations, we loaned 305 wheelchairs, 576 shower/tub chairs, 103 hospital beds and 42 lift chairs.

Additionally, we made over 175 pickups and deliveries in 2015, assisting those who cannot get to MERP.

We cannot do it without YOUR support.  Please consider donating today.  Equipment can be brought to either MERP location.  Call us at 724-347-6377 to make arrangements.  Financial support assists us with refurbishing expenses.  Please consider a generous gift today by clicking the Donate Now button!

In comparison, the totals for the entire year of 2014:
MERP loaned 2,142 pieces of equipment valued at $303,476 to 1,538 people.

A team from St. Mary Medical Center visited this past fall to tour both MERP facilities.  St. Mary Medical Center is a 373 bed facility located in Langhorne, PA, just outside of Philadelphia.

walkers greenville croppedIn 2012, a MERP coordinator and the UPMC Horizon Hospital director of volunteer services gave a
presentation about our MERP program at a national conference.  The St. Mary Medical Center staff just so happened to be at the conference, heard the presentation and thought, “We could do that too!”  They were so excited about our MERP program’s successes that they returned to Langhorne and immediately began the long process that would lead to their own medical equipment re-use program.  Four years later, they are almost ready to loan out their first piece of equipment!  For now, their medical equipment re-use program will be run out of their St. Mary Thrift Store right in the downtown.  A grand opening is scheduled for February 1, 2016.

They wanted to visit our facilities so they could see our processes and ask questions.  During their
two-day visit, many ideas and suggestions were exchanged.  “This  is going to be a very beneficial
partnership for both parties.  We are extremely excited that another hospital wants to emulate what we have developed!” stated Kateri Linn.  We wish them much luck in this exciting endeavor.
